Vintage KFMB-TV Test Pattern

Following on our program about TV sign-ons and sign-offs, our good friend and listener Rick Bosscher, RF Systems Manager for the KFMB Stations, kindly donated an original test pattern slide that was used at KFMB-TV Channel 8 in San Diego.  Above is an image of the slide.  Smitty comments that he remembers this test pattern being used on the air, early mornings prior to sign-on as late as the early 80s.  These patterns are almost never seen today in the age of all-night infomercials and overnight news services.  We thank Rick Bosscher for his kindness in sharing this neat slide with us.  In case you missed this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, just go to our podcast library and listen to show 99!

  1. This is perhaps one of the few instances of a CBS affiliate using a test pattern devised by NBC. A few stations used old-style B&W circular test patterns into the later '80's and probably early '90's; namely KABC-TV (Channel 7) in Los Angeles, WUAB (Channel 43) in Lorain/Cleveland, OH, and WCBS-TV (Channel 2) in New York. Any info as to which other stations in the San Diego area used what "old-style" TP's (terminology courtesy Worldwide TV/FM DX Association [WTFDA], from 1949 "RCA Pict-O-Guide - Vol. II" by John R. Meagher)?
