The 70th Anniversary of D-Day (Program 139)

On June 6, 1944, Allied Troops landed in Normandy, on the northern coast of France, to begin the liberation of Europe from the tyranny of the Nazis.  The story of the landings; their planning and execution, and the bravery and sacrifice of the men who landed that day, are legendary.  The immense effort and sacrifice of the fighting forces resulted in many losses, many men perishing on the beaches of Utah, Omaha, Juno, Sword, and Gold Beaches.  But this monumental effort was a success: the ultimate liberation of France and the beginning of the end of the Nazi regime.  The loss of life, a tragic consequence of war, was tempered by the fact that those sacrifices resulted in achieving the victory toward which all of the participants that day, worked so hard.  Coming soon on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, we remember that day that our parents and grandparents had been waiting for.  A major turning point in the Second World War.  We recall some of the people involved, the men who sailed to their destiny in Europe, our military and political leaders of the time, the Allied cause to which so many were committed.  We recall the state of the world at that time, and we listen to how Americans first heard the news by actual recordings of some of the news bulletins, as they were first broadcast in the wee hours of that June 6th so long ago.  Join us on this upcoming episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site.
